Buy Local

(kathleen sabo)
Don’t buy your romaine lettuce at the mega-grocery store,
When you live outside of Denver and it comes from Jersey’s shore.
Don’t shuck that Iowa corn to put in boiling water,
When you’re planning a big picnic, up in Portland with your daughter.

Let’s be vocal,
Buy your food local,
Spend your nickels,
On homemade pickles.
Give your dollars,
For carrots and collards,
Hand over your money,
For local honey.
When you need produce,
Don’t think to roam,
Buy food that’s growing,
Close to home.

Don’t ever in the summer put hothouse tomatoes in your mouth,
Especially when you’re in Boston and the fruit’s from the deep south.
Don’t look for commercial jams not made a wholesome, natural way,
When you can choose from many flavors at the farmer’s market on Saturday.

Oh, let’s be vocal,
Buy your food local,
Spend your nickels,
On homemade pickles.
Give your dollars,
For carrots and collards,
Hand over your money,
For local honey.
When you need produce,
Don’t think to roam,
Buy food that’s growing,
Close to home…

Purchase a pound of farm-made cheese,
From your neighbor if you please,
Shop near home,
Let’s not pull punches,
Get your herbs and greens in bunches.
Send for truffles from France if you must,
We can’t get them here so it’s just,
If you want Clementines they must come from Spain,
We can’t grow them here,
Even when we have rain…

So please put long-distance foods on your table,
Only when you’re not able…

To buy local!
