Blessed Be

“When I am with you there’s no place I’d rather be…”

“Rather Be,” Clean Bandit, Featuring Jess Glynne

Whatever age you were, chances are there is at least one trip or experience that you remember as an eye and heart opener…a view (or “re-view”) of and into things other that expanded your horizon and opened up doors of possibility and even destiny. Yes, that one!

This summer, I drove from New Mexico with my kids – 12- year old Max and 7-year old Tess – on a road trip back east, to my home state of Connecticut, and beyond. Some might question taking an almost 2,400-mile (initial) car ride with kids that age…but I’d already tested it out, having driven on a 1,500-mile round trip to Mexico in April and then on an 800-mile return trip with them from California in June. Whether it was the throaty vibration of my Mini Cooper Clubman S, or Tess’s ability to create a sort of cave-like space in the back, or Max’s newfound and much-enjoyed front seat experience, or a readiness to move, to go and discover and see – or all of the above! – the kids had been happy and engaged, so I felt good about the miles and hours we would cover. And, this time, we were on a mission to get there in 3 days, for my dad’s 85th birthday, so we had a clear goal and a potential time limit, if we chose to complete that mission.

You know how a journey sometimes begins before it actually physically begins? How you seem to be projected forward metaphysically, so that circumstances and energy show up and align with the journey you are about to take?

Where did your journey begin? You may point to birth, or a seemingly seminal event in your life…others will refer to past lifetimes. But when did YOU start to put in motion the arc of your (preferred) journey, in this lifetime?

Me? Well, I could point to writing my first song at the age of 4 – “Kindergarten Blues,” by the way – or to winning a talent show at the age of 12 or 13…or to standing on the balcony of the Waldorf Astoria’s penthouse at 20, knowingly and expectantly gazing out over the Manhattan skyline while some Kennedy’s and others partied behind me… or maybe to performing on private yachts in New York harbor accompanied by master musicians…or to my sudden and dramatic – and supposedly short-term! – move to New Mexico 23 years ago. See, that’s my point: choose the point, and you place the arc. So, really, YOU get to frame your story…to choose the starting point and define the arc.

9/11 and Me

I got halfway, or less, through a story about my experience on 9/11, eleven years ago, when I realized that it was a story, and that I really wished to communicate other things on this day...

This is my faith, I'm never alone,
This is my life, as I turn every stone...

I just had an opportunity to comment upon a beautiful blog entry a friend had written. I want to share what I wrote, because even though the circumstances you find yourself in may be different, my message to you is the same:

When treasure falls...

OK, sleep soon, but first to jot down some notes about a new song! When we were at Treasure Falls, on the road north of Pagosa Springs, just a few miles from the Summit and Wolf Creek pass, I started to write a song by that title.
